🏛️ The Roots of Kitron: A Century of Tradition

The citron tree—resembling an overgrown, bumpy lemon tree with highly intensely fragrant leaves—has flourished in the fertile soils of Naxos for centuries. Long ago, resourceful Naxian farmers used these leaves to flavor their homemade grape spirits, creating a rustic local drink called Kitrorako. 

The transition from a rustic moonshine to a world-class commercial liqueur happened in the late 19th century:

• The Pioneers: In 1896, the enterprising Vallindrás family founded the historic Vallindrás Distillery in the inland village of Chalkí (Halki). They perfected a method of distilling pure alcohol with essential oils extracted from the leaves, birthing the official Kitron liqueur.
• The Legacy: Today, the historic distillery still functions as a fascinating mini-museum where visitors can view the original 19th-century copper distillation pots and taste the historic recipe. Other esteemed families, like the Promponas Distillery (producing since 1915), continue to preserve this legacy.
• Global Protection: Kitron carries a rare European Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. This law ensures that a bottle cannot be labeled as “Kitron of Naxos” unless it is grown, harvested, and distilled strictly on Naxos island.

🎨 Green, White, or Yellow? Understanding the 3 Varieties

If you visit a local bar, you will notice Kitron comes in three vibrant colors. Each color denotes a completely different alcohol percentage and sweetness level: 

1. Green Kitron (The Sweetest): This variety contains the highest amount of sugar and the lowest alcohol content (usually around 30% ABV). It is mild, intensely aromatic, and perfect for beginners or those with a sweet tooth.
2. White Kitron (The Balance): Sitting right in the middle at 33% ABV, this variety offers a classic balance of citrus fragrance and a clean, traditional spirit finish.
