Water containers
Since water is changed daily (every two days can work as well), we give a very good rinse before putting the fresh water. When you check the surface of the container with your fingers, you can feel if there is calc that is building or if there is food stuck.
With this daily maintanance the water containers remain clean and they do not build up nasty things for the canary.
However after coming back from holiday or if you do not have this daily habit of thoroughly checking and cleaning the water container, you can come up with a not so nice water container. Below a video with the before and after of the water container after holiday.
For the water containers cleaning we use vinegar, we let the container sit in the water with the vinegar for a couple of hours and afterwards everything goes very easy away. Check the video below.
Even if you clean your water containers daily, it is still recommended twice a month at least to clean them with vinegar or a mild soap and rinse them afterwards very well.
Food containers
The seeds containers are easy to be kept clean, cause our canary cannot go on the seeds container. It can access it only from one side and we highly recommend this, cause like this not only the container remains clean but also the canary makes less of a chaos on your floor from the seeds while eating. One more positive of those seed containers is that you can access them from outside, so you disturb the canary less with putting your hand inside the cage.
The fresh food containers though need a good cleaning. You have the ones with fruits or vegetables, that you do not have to worry a lot, but when we use egg for example, this could be potentially dangerous if you do not clean it well.
In the fresh food containers you might also have droppings and those need also to be cleaned well.
The food containers we clean them with warm water and a mild soap right away every time we remove them from the cage. For the droppings sometimes it is easier if you let them with water for a while and like this you can remove them easier.
Remember to rinse them very well and dry them also well before placing them in the cage again.
