If you want to let your canary free fly, there are things that you need to take care before letting your canary out of its cage, so that it is safe for it.
You must be in the room all the time, while the canary is out of the cage. So that it will not be injured or trapped. Supervision of the bird while is roaming free in the room is vital.
It is better to start with a place that is small enough for you to be able to check everything.
There needs to be a lot of light for the canary to be able to, exit safely, fly safely and get back safely.
Have in mind as well that you need to be patient and have time the first times. Cause your canary will need to find its way back to the cage. This will be the best way to proceed.
Here the several things you need to take care:
- close doors (that lead outside and that also connect rooms)
- close windows (that the bird cannot escape the house)
- Turn off the ceiling fan (it could injure the bird)
- cover fireplaces
- cover mirrors (so that they will not try to flight into them)
- cover windows (so that they will not try to flight throw them)
- check your plants, if they are toxic/dangerous, if your canary takes a bite (in case you are not fast enough)
- if you have plants where you used chemicals, remove them from the room, so that there is no chance that your canary will touch the plant or will eat the dirt for example
- do not have any yellow bug stickers, that your canary could get stuck
- check all the corners, your canary could get trapped and have a plan to rescue it
- do not have any other pets in the room (a cat or a dog are maybe very clear, that you cannot have them there, but also other birds and especially bigger birds than a canary. Even multiple canaries free flying together could be a problem, so always pay attention to this point. The canaries could injure one the other)
- if you have an aquarium and you use chemicals, do not let your canary near it. Have a lid at least when your canary is free flying
- remove small objects (that the canary could try to taste/eat)
- remove ropes that the canary could get trapped or entangled in
If the canary is not entering in the cage, bring the cage close to it and have enough lights for it to enter it. Try to entice your canary maybe with some salad in the cage or something that you know it likes.
Otherwise you will have to catch your canary with a towel with lowering the lights to make it difficult for it to go away/escape from you.
Always let the birds sleep in their cage. If you let them sleep outside the cage, they will also wake up outside the cage and they might be disoriented. They will also have no immediate access to food and water, that should be in their cage. Even if the canary is not returning voluntarily in the cage for the night, catch it softly and put it back.
