Kimolos, the island of Syrmata

Quite small, with many Greek people still living there and still very authentic, Kimolos is one of the islands we are looking forward to returning there.

Horio

We arrived with the boat Osia Methodia, that makes several times per day the trip from Milos (Apollonia port) to Kimolos (Psathi port). It is a quick trip and you have in the interior but also the exterior seats. The price per person in 2,40 euros. Motorbike with 1 person 4,30 euros and 2 people 6,70 euros. Car with 1 person 12 euros and 2 people 14,40 euros. These were the prices we paid in May 2024 and it was more expensive to take our rented car to Kimolos than renting a moto or a car directly at Kimolos, when we would arrive.

There are places to rent a bike or a car directly at the port. We got a motorbike from RAC and it was very smooth and easy the rental thanks to Raffaele. It was also friendlier and cheaper from the rest we called, when we went there.

If you want to spend only 1 day there, it is quite possible to see lots of places, if you do not really want to spend a lot of time on a beach.

Our favorite spots on the island was Rema, Goupa, Kara. Those small places to store the boats on the rocks were quite astonishing. With their different colors, so close to the beautiful light blue of the water. There are also some of them, that became Airbnbs.

Prasonisi on the east of Kimolos was also very beautiful but you have only a dirty road to arrive there. On the way there, you can make a small stop at “Agios Minas”, that is a small port with fishermen boats, that is very cute.

“Mavrospilia” on the south-west part of the island is also a very beautiful beach. Again you need to go through a dirty road to get there. On your way, you will see some rocks in the sea, that are very beautiful and you can make a stop there.

Mavrospilia

The rocks look a lot like Koufonisi (Ano) and the color of the water vary depending on the beach that you will choose to go. Even if it is a small island, you have quite a big variety of beaches to choose, if you are ok with driving through dirty roads.

The island has no spring water like Milos. It is dependent on the rainwater and has cisterns and wells. There were times when the water from the wells and cisterns was finished, so please take care of the water and use it wisely.

We ate at Kali Kardia “Bohoris” at the Horio and while the prices were very high and the quantities quite small, the food was good. Lots of people recommended “Sardis” for fish but we couldn´t try it. I guess it will have to wait another trip.

Further recommendations were to have a coffee or waffles at “Stavento” at Horio or sweets or ice-cream at “Raventi” at the port, but these remain also in our list to try next time.

A typical food to try are “ladenies” at Kimolos. You can buy it in one of the bakeries of the island and it is a yeast dough (like pizza) with tomato, onion, oregano. There is also a traditional type of pasta that looks like orzo but without having the same shape and it is called “aranto”. Famous are the cheeses “xino” and “manoura”.
