Species of algae located on Naxos island with more details

Close to the rocks you can see lots of fish and also algae! This foto is taken from our beautiful beach studio!

In a previous post we already spoke about the algae.

Here we will go a bit more in detail about them.

The species that we found at Naxos Island and more specifically at Alyko beach located near the Chora of Naxos are the following ones:

  • Posidonia oceanica, commonly known as Neptune grass or Mediterranean tapeweed, is a seagrass species that is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. Posidonia has been used for about twenty years as a biological indicator. In fact, the plant has all the characteristics of a good bioindicator. It also forms underwater meadows of considerable ecological importance. It constitutes the climax community of the Mediterranean Sea and plays an important role in protecting the coastline from erosion. It is home to many animal and plant organisms that find food and protection in the meadows. (Posidonia oceanica, n.d.)
  • Laurencia is a genus of red algae that grows in temperate and tropical shore areas. It has numerous ecological roles, serving as refuge for different marine organisms in areas where they grow abundantly, forming forests. They are also hosts of various microorganisms and parasitic algae, known as Janczewskia. (Laurencia, n.d.)
  • Padina is a genus of brown macroalgae in the family Dictyotaceae. The genus is distinguishable because of its characteristic shape resembling a peacock tail structure. (Padina , n.d.)
  • Jania rubens is a genus of red macroalgae with hard, calcareous, branching skeletons in the family Corallinaceae. It is an articulated coralline algae. (Jania, n.d.)

At Apollon we found an additional one:

  • Acetabularia is a genus of green algae in the family Polyphysaceae. It is a single-celled organism and it is found at a depth of one to two meters. (Acetabularia, n.d.)

Please keep the environment clean. Keep a bag with you for the trash and if you see garbage on the beach, that you can take it with you, please do not leave it there. Someone was less responsible than you and didn´t take case of the environment.

Here you can see also Aformoi beach underwater!!!
