Yuvetsi – greek traditional beef stew with orzo pasta (kritharaki)

This is a typical Sunday lunch food. The smells of the cinnamon with the tomato sauce is a smell that brings nice feelings.

Ingredients

  • 3 medium onions
  • olive oil (you can use also lard if you have left over)
  • 2 carrot
  • 250gr beef meat in small pieces
  • 1 bay leave
  • half a cinnamon stick
  • 250ml tomato sauce
  • 250ml water
  • 1 cube of broth
  • optional: serve with bukovo or cheese

Steps

  • Cook the onions in medium fire in olive oil till they become transparent.
  • Add the meat in medium/high fire and when they change color add the tomato sauce, the spices, the water and the cube of broth
  • When it starts boiling, reduce the fire to low, use the cover of the pot and let it around 45 minutes (this will depend on the pieces you cut the meat. It should be melting in your mouth. If it is not, it needs more time)
  • Add the carrots in small pieces and cook 10-15 minutes more
  • When the carrots are also done, you can add more water and the orzo as well and follow the instructions of your package.
