Cold brew coffee

The summer is here and sometimes all I need is a cold coffee and bask outside on the sun. Cold brew coffee is really easy to make but you need coarse ground coffee. I do not have a grinder but I grinded mine with an immersion hand blender. You need to put something on top of the bowl you are going to grind the coffee, otherwise you are gonna have coffee literally everywhere in your kitchen.

Alternative ways to grind your coffee would be:

  • Blender or food processor (this should be the easier and without making a mess)
  • In a ziplog bag and you can smash them with a rolling pin or a hammer (sounds extreme but it should work!)
  • mortar and pestle

The coffee is milder, less bitter, less acidic and gives a long lasting kick of caffeine. But what I also consider as a must, is that when it is ready I can seal it in a bottle in the fridge and I can have a cold coffee the day that it is ready but the 2 following days as well.

The ratio I used was 1 cup of coffee and 4 cups of water. The ratio changes and goes from 1:3 to 1:5. I guess you will have to try a bit what you like with the kind of coffee you have at home. Or if you want to make cold brew coffee concentrate you can use a ratio of 1:2 but you need to add water later otherwise is going to be too strong.

For example Lavazza suggests 50gr of coffee for 500ml of water (in the end there are the links) and

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of coarse ground coffee
  • 4 cups of cold water

Preparation

  • Add in a container the coffee and the water and stir well until the coffee grounds are well soaked in water
  • Use a lid for your container and place it in the fridge overnight. Ideally at least 12 hours. Again here you can find a big differences in the steeping timing that can reach 20 hours.
  • Drain the coffee with a coffee filter in another container, where you can also keep for later the coffee that you are not gonna drink right away. Always closed the container, so that you do not loose the aroma
  • Consume in the next 2-3 days and keep it stored in the fridge. You can keep it up to a week but I usually make coffee for maximum 3 days ahead. In the end it is easy to make. Why not having fresh coffee?

How to serve it?

You can just add a few ice cubes on a glass and pour your cold brew. For more elaborated ideas, I include some sites here

It is really easy! The only thing is that you need to “program” it ans prepare it the day before but that would be all!
